Canned Tuna

I know they say to stay away from fish in general during pregnancy but how bad is canned tuna. I have only had it a maybe 7 or 8 times through out my pregnancy (i am 24 weeks) but I have been really craving it lately. How bad is it really?

@MommyC2015,

I think it's fine in moderation! Go ahead and eat it!

I was told canned tuna was fine?

@MommyC2015,

White/albacore tuna needs to be eaten in moderation as it is high in mercury. My doctor said no more than once a month. Chunk light tuna can be eaten more frequently as it is very low in mercury. My doctor said once or twice a week was fine. She actually recommends eating low mercury fish twice a week as it is very good for the baby's brain development just avoid raw fish.

Fish like salmon is actually really good for pregnant women (serving size about 6/8 oz) per week. Great omega's for baby's Brain development

For chunk light, it's six 6 oz servings per month.

For albacore, only three 6 oz. servings per month.

I use the starkist tuna pouches (chunk light only) which are only 2.6 oz. I also sometimes use the ready to eat tuna salad 3 oz pouches, but some of that is mayo and relish so it's still closer to the same 2.6 oz.

This comes from american pregnancy . Org. They have a list of what fish to avoid and what serving sizes they recommend.

I get WIC and they allow me to get canned tuna, so I'm assuming it's okay.

@MommyC2015,

That's fine . Don't eat it everyday of course but in moderation your fine I've had Tuna afew times too

My midwife told me I can eat tuna once a week.

They say you should limit your intake to 1 small can per week. So your fine ! X
